OAU starts Online Distance Learning

The Obafemi Awolowo University’s Centre for Distance Learning (OAUCDL) has matriculated its pioneer set of students for the Online Distance Learning Programme. A statement from the centre indicated that the event was held at the Oduduwa Hall of the OAU Main Campus.

The programme is accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and allows students to receive their lectures online using a customised study tablet (Vigitab).

The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Bamitale Omole, told the matriculating students that: “You have the singular honour of being the first set of students in our eLearning programme, the first of its type in Nigeria.

“Your distant learning mode of admission does not in any way imply inferiority in status, compared to our conventional students, either in terms of lecture delivery or the certificates you will receive. Our university guards jealously the integrity of its degrees and diplomas
whether obtained in the conventional or distance learning mode.

Hence your various curricula have gone
through the usual high standards of excellence of the University Senate for which Obafemi Awolowo University
is well known.” The Centre for Distance Learning Director, Professor Bode Asubiojo, said: “This development is the first of its kind in Nigeria and we are pleased with it. We have replicated the classroom experience on a tablet device for students. Students can receive lectures, submit assignments, participate in forums, take quizzes, and even rewind their lecturers, all from the comfort of their homes, offices or wherever they may be in Nigeria or abroad.”

The eLearning solution is powered by a Learning Management System (VigiLearn) that allows students to receive lectures, submit assignments, relate with peers, participate in group discussions and get graded without being physically within the four walls of a lecture room.

“Our primary charge at the centre is to provide quality education to the teeming Nigerian youths who possess the prerequisite qualifications for entry to Nigerian universities but are denied admission owing to inadequate facilities on campus and the working class who are desirous of pursuing undergraduate and post graduate programmes whilst still retaining their jobs,”

Professor Asubiojo said. Courses on offer for the Online Distance Learning Programme are B.Sc. Accounting and Bachelor of Nursing Science. The Centre plans to include more courses in the future.

Our Online Learning is qualitative says OAU

After matriculating students into the New Online Distance learning, Authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University have assured their online distance-learning students of quality academic delivery.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bamitale Omole, gave the assurance during the matriculation of pioneer students of the Online Distance Learning Programme.

The university’s Centre for Distance Learning runs the programme, which at present offers degree courses in Accounting and Nursing. Omole, who urged the students to be committed to
their studies, noted that their certificates would not be inferior to those obtained via the conventional approach.

He said, “You have the singular honour of being the first set of students in our eLearning programme. I congratulate you on being pioneers of the eLearning revolution in the country. “I want to assure you that distant learning mode of
admission does not imply in any way inferiority in status, compared to our conventional students either in terms of lecture delivery or of the certificates you
receive at the end of your programmes.

“Our university guards jealously the integrity of its degrees and diplomas whether obtained in the conventional or distance learning mode. Hence, your
various curricula have gone through the usual high standards of excellence of the university Senate for which OAU is well known.”

The OAUCDL Director, Prof. Bode Asubiojo, also promised that the centre would continue to provide quality education in line with the university’s tradition. Asubiojo said, “Our primary charge at the centre is to provide quality education to the teeming number of Nigerian youths who possess the prerequisite qualifications for entry to universities but are denied admission owing to inadequate facilities on campus.

“It also targets the working class who are desirous of pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes while retaining their jobs. The Online Distance Learning programme allows us to deliver on this objective.” Asubiojo, who said the programme had already received the National Universities Commission’s accreditation, noted that its students use customised study tablets (Vigitabs) for learning.

He added, “This development is the first of its kind in Nigeria and we are pleased with it. We have replicated the classroom experience on a tablet device for
students. For the first time, students can receive lectures, submit assignments, participate in forums, take quizzes and even rewind their lecturers, all from the comfort of their homes, offices or wherever they may be in Nigeria or abroad.”

We mean no harm, says NYSC

The management of NYSC now says  that both foreign and local graduates with effect for 2014 Batch C Mobilization exercise, mobilization process will be only:

All prospective Corp Members are to  register online at the NYSC portal, www.nysc.org.ng , www.nysc.gov.ng

All Graduates are expected to carryout their Biometric enabled Online Registration using their Matriculation Number and JAMB registration Number

As they register online they are to pay a sum of Four Thousand Naira Only (#4,000) using any Bank Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Cards or the PIN Vending option from any bank in Nigeria.

This allows them to print and re-print their Call up letters online in case of loss of call-up letters.

Those who wish to collect their Call-up letters from the institution need not to pay #4,000, after online Registration with effect form 2015 Batch "A" all prospective Corps Members will have to print their Call-up  letter online.

The Online Registration for NYSC 2014 Batch "C" service will commence on the 20th August 2014 and end 12th of October 2014.

Since this Publications has triggered many statement amongst our prospective Corp Members it is viewed as a way to exploit the to be Corp Members.

Mrs. Olubunmi Aderibigbe, NYSC agency's Director of Press and Public Relations in an interview with the News agency Nigeria at Abuja on Friday 12th September, 2014 said contrary to this the agency have done this :

Many Prospective Corp Members travels far kilometers away from home just to get the call up letters

To reduce the risk associated with the mode of collection of the Call-up letters, eliminate sharp practices associated with the old process.

This is will help to mobilize our Nigerians in the disposal with ease which enhance a lot of data sharing between schools and the agency.

Although, several Corpers have been complaining about the Challenges associated with the process of downloading this electronic call-up letters.

She assured stakeholders in the sector that though the system is in its early stage, efforts would be made to improve on observed lapses to make it more user-friendly.

The Management  of NYSC remained committed to the welfare and wellbeing of corp Members and would in no way exploit them as some of them views this new development.

Tod Today, 2nd October, 2014, The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the policy of charging National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members N4,000 for on-line registration into the camp, for the one year compulsory service to their fatherland by the NYSC authorities. This was made known yesterday, in a statement signed by Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, the Congress’ General Secretary. The statement read: “We, at the Nigeria Labour Congress, are opposed to the policy of charging corps members N4,000 for on-line registration.” Commending the NYSC authorities for bringing up the ‘register on-line initiative’, which according to the Congress, will save costs and risks associated with travel. It however finds it improper the idea of charging the prospective corps members. “While we commend the authorities of the National Youth Service Corps for this initiative which evidently saves prospective corps members from costs and risks associated with movement or travel, we certainly find it morally wrong for the authorities to turn this initiative into a money-making venture”, it stated. According to NLC, the authorities of NYSC should not take advantage of the weak and the vulnerable. “As a general rule, any technology that seeks to increase the cost of production is not worth the effort. “In the instance case, we have reason to believe that the on-line registration initiative helps to reduce both administrative and bureaucratic costs, which NYSC had borne all along. Embracing technology should reduce operating cost, time and wastage. “The authorities at the NYSC are however advised to retrace their steps by way of withdrawing charges associated with the policy,” the statement read.

This is a plus  for the management of the NYSC! To get help on how to easily obtain your call-up letter online visit www. ajebutternysc.blogspot.com

As at December 23, 2014, The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resolved the cost of the recently introduced N4,000 online registration for prospective corps members.

The decision was reached at a conference of NYSC stakeholders held in Abuja. The Conference also agreed that conscious efforts should be made to carry out more sentisization on the online registration at the various corps producing institutions.

This they said will readily offer full understanding, workability as well as acceptability of the online package to the students who are direct beneficiaries of the programme.

Some of the stakeholders present at the conference are;  NYSC Management, executive members of NANS, Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities (ARNU), executive members, Conference of Registrars of Polythenics and Colleges of Technolgy in Nigeria (COREN), Civil Society Groups, others and Corps Members of 2014 batches 'B' & 'C'.
