14 days ultimatum over unpaid salaries

The Academic Staff Union of the Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu, Ogun State, has again given the state government a 14-day ultimatum over its failure to pay their 48-month salary arrears as at February 10, 2015

In a letter to Governor Ibikunle Amosun dated January 26, 2015, and signed by its Chairman, Dr. Dan Oludipe and the Secretary, Modupe Owolabi-Gabriel, respectively, the union listed among the contending issues the non- payment of their July-December 2010, and February-September 2011 salaries and salary
arrears from July 2009 – June, 2013, all totalling 48 months.

They sent the letter through the Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Mrs. Segun Odubela. The union also demanded that the government should regularise the payment of their salaries and return the
institution to its original permanent site at Ijagun.

According to them, if that is done, TASCE will have access to her Internally Generated Revenue and will be able to assist the government in meeting some of its financial obligations as obtained in other state-owned tertiary institutions.

The union had also demanded that the government should constitute a formidable governing council for the college and the release of the white paper on the existence of the Tai Solarin Institutions (TASCE and Tai
Solarin University of Education), as submitted by the visitation panel.

Besides, the union urged the state government to retrieve all the certificates of the affiliated programme (full-time and part-time) of TASCE, issued out by
TASUED, and return same to TASCE along with huge funds realised from the issuance.

The union leaders said the 14-day ultimatum became necessary following the expiration of a 21-day strike notice given the government last November.

Oludipe, who said the last time they received their salaries was in August 2014, pleaded with the government to come to their aid as the members were
finding it difficult to meet their financial obligations.

The governor in November last year during the strike by the union said his administration did not owe them 48
months salaries, but the immediate past
administration.

He, however, promised to pay as soon as the government was buoyant enough to do so.

Building is fun!

Expect to see towering skyscrapers and leaning Towers of Pisa decorating your table when you do this fun activity with your child. Learning how to see the world and then translate it into 3-D can be challenging when in the two dimensional world of paper and pencils or crayons. This activity encourages a child to sculpt in free form with the only rule that they have to build 'up'.
What You Need: Mini marshmallows Toothpicks What You Do: 1. Try helping to build a small shape to get your child started. Stick 4 toothpicks into 4 marshmallows to build a square (with the marshmallows forming the connectors). 2. Next, have your child start moving his sculpture 'up'. Place 4 toothpicks vertically into the marshmallows with another set of marshmallows on each end. 3. Repeat your first square and connect the marshmallows. You now have a 3D square which can form the base of a tower or even perhaps a house. 4. Let your child's imagination take over from there! Did You Know? The resulting sculpture is an example of three dimensional artwork made by combining hard material with a plastic material (this material is mimicked by the marshmallows. Sculptors also create sculptures out of stone, wood, glass or metal. Their art is often painted. Spending time discussing local public artwork in parks and plazas with your child is a great way to get him thinking about structures. After building structures in three dimensions young artists may start noticing three dimensional shapes in local architecture. Not only will your child love playing (and eating!) marshmallows, but he'll learn a bit about construction as well. Kids don't often get the chance to work on what teachers call "visual spatial skills"-- in other words, they don't often get to work on being able to think in physical space. This is a great project to get them thinking in 3-D! Note: since marshmallows are not readily available in Nigeria so improvise and be creative.... Your kids will love this activity. Not again, SSANU !

After over 3 months of total, comprehensive and indefinite strike over the unmet demands from 2009 up to 2013 by the Government, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo chapter yesterday 10th of September, 2014 said that after several deliberations and letters to the state Government band university management, SSANU members are yet to be paid their salaries.
"It is against the Labour law for a worker's salaries to be withheld within two months of embarking on strike. It is simply a means of victimization" said Mr. Saheed Oseni, Chairman of the Union. Haven written several letters to Governor Babatunde Fashola, met with appropriate authorities on the issues but had not received positive response so far. Mr Oseni said the Union was planning to ground activities in the institution soon. If the salaries were not paid, as they would not forfeit their entitlement. 'When two elephants are fighting the grass suffers' so they say, for the sake of our dear Nigerian students please all concerned authorities should please respond as we don't want to go on an indefinite or definite strike any more.
